What's waiting for you
Kyrenia is where most of our guests are heading, and it is easy to see why. A crescent of Venetian warehouses around a stone harbour, a Byzantine castle at one end, and the Beşparmak mountains rising straight up behind the town. The five-star resorts with casinos are concentrated along this coast, east towards Çatalköy and west towards Alsancak.
The drive is the most travelled route on the island. You leave Larnaca on the motorway, skirt Nicosia, cross at Metehan, then climb the ridge and drop down to the sea. From the top of the pass you get your first look at Kyrenia and the coast — worth staying awake for.
Sources disagree on the exact distance, quoting anywhere between 76 and 80 kilometres. In practice, door to door, it is a little over an hour.

Worth your afternoon
Kyrenia Castle
A Byzantine and Venetian fortress guarding the harbour, with the Shipwreck Museum and its 2,300-year-old trading vessel inside.
The old harbour
A horseshoe of stone warehouses turned into restaurants. The reason most people fall for Kyrenia in the first hour.
Bellapais Abbey
A Gothic abbey in the hills above town, best at golden hour. Lawrence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons in the village below it.
St Hilarion Castle
A crag-top castle on the Beşparmak ridge, with the whole coast — and on clear days, Turkey — laid out beneath you.
