Kyrenia (Girne): the harbour town of North Cyprus
Kyrenia (Girne) is North Cyprus's most beautiful town — a horseshoe harbour, a Byzantine castle, mountain villages and five-star resorts, about 80 km (~1 h 15–1 h 40 door-to-door) from Larnaca Airport across the Green Line.

If you only see one town in North Cyprus, make it Kyrenia — Girne in Turkish. It curls around a horseshoe harbour where fishing boats still bob in front of restaurants built into old carob warehouses, with a Crusader-era castle at one end and the Beşparmak mountains rising behind. It's the island's most photographed spot, the heart of its resort coast, and the base most visitors choose. Here's what to know — and how to get there without the usual arrival stress.
The lay of the land
“Kyrenia” means both the harbour town and the coastal strip around it. The town itself is compact and walkable; the character changes quickly as you move into the hill villages and along the coast road. These are the areas people actually stay in:
Harbour & centre
the heartThe old horseshoe harbour, the castle, the marina and the best of the restaurants and cafés. Where you'll spend your evenings.
Bellapais
~10 min upA hillside village above town with a famous 13th-century abbey and long views over the coast — calm, pretty, a touch literary.
Çatalköy
~10 min eastWhitewashed lanes, quiet streets and a strong expat community with shops, bars and restaurants of its own.
Alsancak
~15 min westA large hillside village with beach clubs down the slope, good facilities and an international feel.
Lapta
~20 min westGreen all summer thanks to mountain springs, cooler air and panoramic views — one of the calmest places to stay.
Karmi & Karaoğlanoğlu
just westKarmi is a restored cobbled mountain village; Karaoğlanoğlu, on the coast road, puts you within walking distance of coves and fish restaurants.
Where to stay: resorts & casinos
Kyrenia's five-star hotels sit just outside the centre along the coast — most are beachfront, with spas, pools and, in several cases, a casino and live entertainment. They're the reason many guests come to the North in the first place. Whichever you choose, we'll have you at the door.

What to see
Kyrenia Castle & harbour
Byzantine in origin and added to by every ruler from Richard the Lionheart to the Ottomans, the castle guards the harbour mouth. Walk the ramparts for the classic view down over the boats and the carob-warehouse restaurants.
The Shipwreck Museum
Inside the castle, the remains of a Greek merchant ship that sank off Kyrenia around 300 BC — the oldest recovered wreck in Cypriot waters, found by a local diver in 1967.
St Hilarion Castle
The fairy-tale mountain castle standing sentinel above the town, its towers climbing the ridge of the Beşparmak range. The climb rewards you with the whole coastline at your feet.
Bellapais Abbey
A serene 13th-century Gothic abbey in the village Lawrence Durrell made famous in Bitter Lemons of Cyprus — a few minutes up the mountain and worth every one.
Beaches & nature
The coast either side of Kyrenia is a string of sandy bays and beach clubs:
- Escape Beach (Yavuz Çıkarma) — about 5 km west, the liveliest: sunbeds, water sports, restaurants and a beach club that runs music nights.
- Alagadi Turtle Beach — around 18 km east, a protected nesting ground for loggerhead and green turtles, with an unspoiled, peaceful feel.
- Karaoğlanoğlu Beach — roughly 8 km west, small and local, with fish restaurants right on the shore.
- Denizkızı — a family-friendly beach west of town with lifeguards, part of the Denizkızı hotel complex.
Alagadi is a working nesting site, not just a nice beach. During the nesting season — roughly 1 May to 31 October — the beach is closed to the public from 20:00 to 08:00, and lights, camera flashes and fires are prohibited at all times. Guided nesting walks are run by the conservation team. Plan an afternoon, not an evening.

Universities & students
Kyrenia is a student town as well as a resort one. Girne American University (GAU) — the first university founded in North Cyprus, back in 1985 — has its Karmi campus at Karaoğlanoğlu, just west of the centre, and there's also the University of Kyrenia and Arkın University of Creative Arts nearby. Arriving students (and visiting families) are one of our most common airport pickups — a named welcome at Larnaca and a calm drive north on the first, most disorienting day.
Larnaca to Kyrenia, handled.
Most European visitors fly into Larnaca (LCA), the closest well-connected airport. From arrivals it's about 80 km to Kyrenia across the Green Line — a drive we make every day. We meet you at the airport, cross the border in one vehicle, and take you door to door to your hotel.
Frequently asked
How far is Kyrenia from Larnaca Airport?
About 80 km — roughly 1 h 15 to 1 h 40 door-to-door, including a short passport stop at the Metehan crossing. A private transfer takes you the whole way in one vehicle.
Is Kyrenia worth visiting?
Yes — it's the prettiest town in the North: the harbour and castle, St Hilarion above it, Bellapais Abbey nearby, beaches along the coast and five-star resorts. How the north compares to the south.
Where should I stay in Kyrenia?
For resort life, the five-star coast — Merit Park, Cratos, Lord's Palace, Elexus, Acapulco, Kaya Palazzo. For a village feel, Bellapais, Çatalköy, Alsancak, Lapta or Karmi.
Do I cross the border to reach Kyrenia?
From Larnaca, yes — at the Metehan checkpoint, where a passport is enough for most visitors and it takes minutes. Our chauffeur handles it, door to door. More on the crossing.
Can I visit Alagadi turtle beach in the evening?
Not during nesting season. From roughly 1 May to 31 October the beach is closed to the public between 20:00 and 08:00, and lights, flash photography and fires are prohibited. Visit in the afternoon, or join a guided nesting walk.
